My Personal Plant Journey

Updated: Oct 29, 2020

To be completely honest, I haven’t always been a huge fan of houseplants as I initially didn’t understand their purpose and why so many people, like my “crazy plant lady” of a sister, loved them so much. So, how did I become a “crazy plant lady” myself and even create a blog solely dedicated to houseplants, you may ask? Good question.

Well, like many others, I have felt the emotional drain of COVID-19 this year. There was a lengthy period of time where I was either at work or at home – I felt like I was doing nothing! So, I was grateful when South Australian restrictions began to ease around April and decided that I needed to invest some of my time and energy into doing something enjoyable!

After genuinely admiring my sister’s Devils Ivy Epipremnum aureum, I decided to buy one for myself and quickly realised just how lovely houseplants are and how much beauty and joy they can bring to my bedroom décor, as well as my life in general. From there, it felt like I couldn’t stop at one plant and had to keep going; I’ve been to various plant nurseries, always wanting the prettiest plant, always wanting the greenest leaf and always wanting more!

My first four plants!

While it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, with two out of four of my first ever plant purchases having perished due to overwatering (R.I.P), I can wholeheartedly say that my mood has improved significantly – I don’t remember a time where I haven’t left a plant store with the biggest grin on my face!

Indoor gardening gives me immense happiness and acts as a soothing reliever from the stress that life, particularly this year, throws my way. I’m completely drawn to big leafy foliage and plants of the variegated variety and am currently obsessed with matching the colours of my plants to the colours of my pots. I find it aesthetically pleasing and sometimes find myself looking for a pot before even having a plant to go with it!

Matching plant and pot colours

Right now, I’m trying to learn more and more about houseplant topics such as watering schedules, potting mixes, propagation techniques and millions of others so that I can give my plants the best proper care. Creating this blog and posting on social media has been rewarding as I’ve connected with other plant lovers and learned from their experiences too. I cannot wait to buy more, learn more and grow more, so stay tuned!

Thank you for reading! I hope you’ve enjoyed finding out a bit more about my plant journey.
